Frequently-Asked-Questions About Perfect Binding

Spines of a stack of books.

Perfect binding is the binding method used on softcover books found in libraries and bookstores. Here are a few FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) to help those wondering if perfect binding is an appropriate or best choice for their project.

Why is it Called Perfect Binding?

Primarily because the perfect binding method produces clean, crisp edges making for a “perfect” appearance to the bound book.

How Does Perfect Binding Work?
Printed interior pages are first stacked in sequential order to form a block. The spine edge of the pages to be bound are roughened with abrasives or knives/blades to create a better bonding surface for glue. Once glue is applied to the spine, the book’s cover is wrapped/folded around the stack of pages. After the glue has cured, the open edges of the book are trimmed (as needed) to create a perfect, clean shape.

Can Perfect Binding Be Used For Any Book?
Perfect binding will not work with books less than 1/8” in thickness as there is not enough surface area along the spine for the glue to properly hold.

What’s the Maximum Number of Pages for a Perfect Bound Book?
Depending on the weight of paper stock used for the interior pages, many perfect bound books can accommodate page counts of around 1,000. Although it’s possible to bind a higher number of pages, such books become excessively bulky and cumbersome to handle. In those instances where a single volume would far exceed 1,000 pages, publishing the work in two or more volumes is recommended.

Is Perfect Binding Expensive?
No, perfect binding is quite affordable which is one of the reasons it’s so popular. And, with on-demand printing, it’s possible to produce books in lower quantities than would have been economically feasible in the past.

Are There Size/Dimension Limitations?
Perfect binding accommodates books ranging in size from pocket-sized books to oversized coffee table books.

Can Pages Be Replaced in a Perfect Bound Book?
No, perfect binding seals pages permanently in place. Corrections/additions/revisions require the printing of a new edition of the book.

Are There Benefits to Saddle-Stitch Binding?
Yes, there are a couple primary benefits to perfect binding:

  • Perfect binding creates a spine that can be printed with the book’s title, author, etc.
  • Perfect bound books are easily stacked and displayed.
