Printing: Silicone Edge Graphics

With the development of wide format digital presses, one of the more popular uses of the technology has been to create signage for retail stores, trade displays and home décor wall art. Silicone Edge Graphics (SEG) is the shorthand term used to describe this popular type of signage.

What are Silicone Edge Graphics?

Silicone Edge Graphics gets its name from a thin silicone beading sewn around the edge of the printed graphic that fits into a channel around the outside of a frame. SEGs are typically printed on a soft fabric material using a dye sublimation process. SEG prints don’t scratch or tear (unlike paper-based signs) which makes them easier to transport or ship. Once the SEG print is inserted in a frame, it is stretched tight giving the image a smooth appearance. Because dye sublimation printing on fabric can create highly photorealistic images with greater durability than when printed on paper and plastic substrates, SEGs have become quite popular.

What About the Frames?

SEGs use a portable, lightweight metal frame that’s easy to transport and set-up. The frames are sometimes called “frameless” or “edgeless” as they don’t border the face of the print like a regular picture frame. Hence, only the printed image is visible when viewed from the front (the frame can only be seen on the side of the print). Frames are available in single or double-sided options and can be used in wall mounted, freestanding, or ceiling-suspended applications. Circular and custom-shaped frames are also an option.

Backlighting is an Option

SEGs can also be backlit to provide greater visual interest — especially applicable in high traffic retail environments. For backlit signs, the SEG fabric is printed with a greater ink saturation to better enhance and diffuse the light.

Ideal for Home Décor Wall Art

SEG prints are finding widespread popularity as wall art in homes and residences due to the ease of customization and the lightweight framing. In addition, the SEG prints are easy to maintain and can be readily changed out if/when the décor changes.
