Artificial Intelligence and Graphic Design

An image of a seashore generated by AI.

As mentioned in our previous post discussing its impact on the printing industry, AI (Artificial Intelligence) is beginning to have a significant impact on a sister industry: graphic design. It’s not clear how things are going to eventually shake out, but AI already is changing how graphic designers work and think.

Image Generation

Perhaps no aspect of AI has generated greater concern and controversy than its usage to generate images — whether images that can’t be distinguished from a photograph featuring AI-generated human beings or images that replicate, mimic or are indistinguishable from those created by famous (or non-famous) artists. There are unresolved issues involving copyright in that the AI image-generating software tools were “trained” — via what’s known as ML (Machine Learning) — by being fed copyrighted works from living photographers and artists. However, AI image-generating tools are becoming more prevalent with each passing day. Most AI image-generating tools generate images based on word descriptions entered at a prompt. Different images can be generated by simply changing the descriptor words.

Video, Sound & Music

AI image-generating software is not limited to still images; videos replete with AI-generated sound, music and voices are now a reality. In addition to generating media-rich videos from word prompts, AI has the capability of editing existing videos to change what a human being is saying and/or the visage of the human saying the words. Known as “deep fakes,” this usage of AI is extremely problematic has raised significant ethical questions.

Page Layout, Image-Editing, Logo & Website Design

Of utmost concern to graphic designers is the prospect AI software will eliminate the profession entirely. A handful of AI tools already exist that automate most aspects of graphic design. Professional image-editing software (like Adobe Photoshop) is now capable (via AI) of editing and transforming images via text prompts and, as mentioned in the previous post, can upscale lo-res images to hi-res with no noticeable effects or artifacts. There are AI logo-generating tools as well as AI website-generating tools available now, although their usage has not become widespread. That may change as AI matures and becomes ever more sophisticated in its capabilities.
