Printing Terminology: What is Textile Printing?

Textile printing encompasses all the aspects of applying color to fabric in designs or patterns (as opposed to creating colored fabrics) so as to affix the image permanently to the cloth fibers. Textile printing is an integral component of creating wearable clothing (e.g., t-shirts, sweatshirts, etc.) for resale or to be handed out in promotional giveaways. While it’s possible to print fabric using a variety of traditional printing methodologies (including block printing and intaglio), silkscreen printing, flexographic printing and digital (inkjet) printing are the most popular methods employed today to print textiles.

Ink or Dye Textile Printing?

For printing on textiles specialty inks are used that are, in essence, dyes formulated with added thickeners to prevent colors from spreading (via capillary action) through the cloth fibers outside of the area of the imprinted design. In some instances, a chemical is applied to the area of the cloth prior to printing that will help affix the colors permanently in the design. Other formulations deploy chemicals activated by exposure to heat to create permanency.

Design Limitations?

Practically any design or image can be printed on cloth including full-color photographs or designs. Company or organization logos, slogans, or marketing messages can be printed in one or multiple colors.
